Babies Don't Keep

I have a friend of a friend named Susan who always does this post entitled "Not Me! Monday" that is so cute! I love to read all the things she didn't do and that inspired me to check out the original source for "Not Me! Monday". This woman puts a crazy amount of time and effort into her blog but I was just skimming through her posts lastnight at work when I found this little poem and it struck a chord with me. I feel like I'm always in a hurry to get on to the next task, like getting the boys up, coming up with things they'll actually eat rather than feed the dogs, finding things to entertain them, planning our day, cleaning the house, worrying about when I'll sleep after working, rushing them through baths, putting them to bed too quickly so I can come down and straighten up the toys, etc., etc. I'm worrying so much about all this insignificant stuff that I don't actually sit back and enjoy these times that will be a memory all too soon. I hope so much that I can keep this poem in the back of my mind and make a conscious effort to just relax and enjoy my two precious boys (and husband, of course!).

Song for a Fifth Child.

Mother, O Mother, come shake out your cloth,
Empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
Hang out the washing, make up the bed,
Sew on a button and butter the bread.

Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She's up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I've grown as shiftless as Little Boy Blue,
Lullabye, rockabye, lullabye loo.
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
Pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo

The shopping's not done and there's nothing for stew
And out in the yard there's a hullabaloo
But I'm playing Kanga and this is my Roo
Look! Aren't his eyes the most wonderful hue?
Lullabye, rockaby lullabye loo.

The cleaning and scrubbing can wait till tomorrow
But children grow up as I've learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down cobwebs; Dust go to sleep!
I'm rocking my baby and babies don't keep.

Thanks, Susan for leading me to this!

All Dressed Up With Nowhere To Go

This past weekend I bought Carter his 1st tie to go with his suit for Easter. I knew he'd be excited about it because he loves to wear church clothes and to tell us he has to go to work and dress like Daddy. When he got up from his nap on Sunday, I showed it to him and he was definitely thrilled. He couldn't understand why he couldn't wear it right then but after some persuasion and assurance that he could wear it the next time we went to church, things were fine. So we planned to go the the 7pm Ash Wednesday service because that way we could all go together but I had a funny feeling that they might not have a nursery. Jamey had a meeting prior to the service and found out there definitely was not a nursery! We could've gone and I'm sure it would've worked out fine but I would feel guilty for all the people that actually wanted to hear what was being said but couldn't over our noisy children! With Carter all dressed up and excited about church, I knew I had to come up with something fun instead so we went to Chick-Fil-A and ate there so he could play inside. He was fine about it and plans to wear his tie on Sunday now instead! I can't tell you how many questions I got about how he was dressed throughout the day but they were at least all complimentary!

The other pictures are just from the past few weeks around the house and then from Marbles. They have a new exhibit upstairs with a hockey rink and Carter loves it as you can see...now if I can only get him to grasp how to hold anything he swings! Bats, tennis rackets, and now hockey sticks he holds the wrong way as you can see from the pictures. He's doing better with the bat but that's the only one I've been able to change so far!

Initially he wanted to wear the tie outside the vest so people could see it.

We took a few without the vest so you could really check it out!

He's too cute.

Jamey took our picture lastnight after we put lotion on our hands and Carter looked silly.

Lofty Aspirations

Lately Carter has been talking a lot about what he wants to be when he grows up. He has a book about outer space that he loves and he loves to tell me he's going to space because he knows the thought scares me to death and he gets a kick out of hearing me act frightened! We told him that to be an astronaut you have to be really smart, etc., etc., so the other day on the way to school he told me has was gonna tell his teachers that he wanted to work really hard and learn a lot so that he could go to space someday! I thought it was pretty cute that he wants to try hard in preschool - I'm sure they learn all sorts of things about being an astronaut there:) The other jobs that top his list at the moment are driving the train at Pullen Park (which I think they save for people with mild handicaps but I didn't share that with Carter!), being the "checker" at Harris Teeter (cashier), or being a fireman. What a list, huh?

Eleventeen still seems to be Carter's favorite number when you count higher than ten and as far as I can tell, I think it comes after 15 but before 16! He always seems to get hung up there! His favorite fruit at the moment is pinealoupe as he calls it, which is really just cantaloupe. I don't know where that came from since they really don't look much alike! The only similarity I can think of is that I buy them both whole and take forever to cut into child-size bites!

We're all still a bit under the weather, Carter with the worst of it at the moment. He had a high fever Saturday that was apparently too high for the minute clinic so after an urgent care trip (thank you Nana), he has bilateral ear infections and a nasty cough/cold. He seems to be feeling lots better and loves when medicine time comes! Cooper is sniffly and coughs a lot but other than that hasn't missed a beat thankfully.

Sniffles and Sneezes

We've all been hanging on to a cold for the past week or so but it seems to have gotten worse over the weekend unfortunately. We can't keep enough tissue in the house and it is so hard to try to teach little ones how to blow their noses! Instead of blowing out, Carter usually sucks in his nose and blows out his mouth - I think Cooper is closer to mastering it than Carter to tell you the truth. Jamey seems to have the worst of it but I think he's feeling better so we'll see who's next - don't you just love Winter?! I just thought I'd share a few pictures from the past week; it's rare to get a picture of Carter in his pj's because he wants to change as soon as he wakes up but lately he's been a little more relaxed about that routine. I guess he just likes to keep up guessing!

This was a few weeks ago but I forgot to write about it. We were making our daily trip to Harris Teeter one afternoon and the boys were in the racecar cart as usual. There weren't many people shopping so we were on an aisle all by ourselves with the exception of an obese woman coming towards us with her cart. As soon as she passed us and was definitely still in earshot, Carter said in his I'm trying to talk normally which sounds more like a yell voice, "Mommy, that lady is FAT!" If I could've crawled into the cart and disappeared I would have but I just talked to him about things we say and don't say and prayed we wouldn't run into her on our next aisle:)

Mister Independent(s)

My children have been something thus far this week to say the least! Cooper is definitely the drama king at the moment and lets you know quickly when something is bothering him! Whenever I try to feed him yogurt, applesauce, or anything you eat with a spoon, he wants the spoon the whole time to feed himself - usually I can give him one to hold onto and that pacifies him but not this time! He was so mad at me that I finally just gave in and let him try all by himself. 30 minutes later he was just finishing up but he really did amazingly well with such runny stuff! When he couldn't scoop more up with the spoon as it got closer to the bottom, he started holding it like a cup and trying to drink the applesauce out! Carter randomly wanted shrimp for dinner this same night; I wasn't quite sure how much to make because I thought they'd despise it but I ended up having to make 2 batches they liked it so much! Cooper enjoyed his ketchup as his 2nd course while he waited on round 2 of shrimp.

We've had quite a heat wave for the past week and I am loving it! Carter can't seem to buck the trend of sweaters, corduroys, oxford shirts, and sweater vests despite the need for shorts and t-shirts. Every morning he brings me what he wants to wear and lately it's been his Winter finest! It's taken a ton of persuading but he has fortunately given in and dressed more appropriate for the temperature, but not without a bargain! He wore "normal" clothes for me all day but after his nap he wanted to wear his original outfit of choice, including his frog scarf - it was 70 degrees outside!

Not the best picture but he was warm!

Not the best again but he definitely looks guilty of baby wipe consumption

Baby Einstein should be renamed Baby Crack

Nunu's Visit!

This week has flown by - it's hard to believe it's been a week since my last post but we've been busy bees! My mom came to visit from Tuesday until Friday and we did everything you can imagine with her, hitting up Marbles Kids Museum, Planet Child, and Jumpin' Beans. Carter was even granted a trip to Moe's and he was very well-behaved thank God! Speaking of him, Carter told me on Monday when he came home from school, "Mommy, there is nothing my God cannot do!" He said he learned it in music with Ms. Helga but we also have a CD that our church sent home for Cooper with a song that says that. I thought it was pretty cute. We had such a good time with Nunu and we were all sad to see her go! We can't wait until the next visit when Pop can come, too.

Friday I went to a lottery for preschool registration that I was so worried about - preschools around here are ridiculously hard to get into so there is always drama come registration time! I really want Cooper to be able to go to preschool next year b/c it will really help me get some sleep the nights after I've worked and I think it would be good for him, too. The problem is that his birthday is after the Wake County school cutoff so even though he'll be 2 September 26th, for preschool he needs to be 2 by August 31st! I found an Episcopal preschool here in Cary that really appeals to me as the teachers and director have all been so nice and they have a toddler class that Cooper is eligible for. The lottery is just luck of the draw so to speak and I was very nervous! I'm glad I have luck on my side because I was the 1st name drawn for 4 year olds, meaning Carter can get a spot there and they also went ahead and registered Cooper for the Toddler class so they are both in at the same school - hooray for me and sleep in the Fall! Here are a few pictures from Nunu's visit and a recent trip to the park! I think my favorite is our naked driver - something about being naked before or after bathtime makes my children a little crazy!

The cutest naked driver I've ever seen!

Carter loves his tools and toolbelt from Brian and Sarah

Coop's quite the drooler these days...don't know where it's coming from with 16 teeth already!
