Harry and Friends

This family is still quite smitten with our newest addition, especially Hudson.  He wants to know where Harry is and what he's doing at all times!  Today Jamey was taking him to the vet and Hudson cried for a good 10 minutes and kept saying, "Mommy, want my puppy back!  Tell Daddy bring Harry Potter back our house!"

Hudson and Harry both love our play tent!

BFF's

Coop cheesing it up.

These two sure look like trouble!

They definitely have a love/hate relationship.  Hudson can't leave Harry alone and Harry will definitely fight back on occasion!

Coop was so proud to be holding a "wheel wizard" as he says it!

Brian and Sarah came to visit for the ACC tournament weekend and we so loved having their fun company! They are always so sweet to our boys and now to our new pup.

Uncle Brian is so much fun!

 What, I didn't do anything!

Poor Hudson has scratches all over his face from laying down and playing with Harry.  He's so tough and barely even cries about it while Carter and Cooper squeal like little girls at the first scrape!

Carter loves to hold Harry like this, poor dog.

He sure is getting big fast, 16+ pounds today at 12 weeks!

Rallying

Cooper has really loved playing tennis again and taking lessons a couple days each week.  His favorite part by far is rallying, or hitting it back and forth with the pro so I had to let you see him in action!

What is a Boy?

Carter is taking First Communion classes at church right now and this past weekend we needed to bring a record of his baptism.  I have a prized possession called a memory box that my grandmother gave me for my college graduation where I like to keep lots of special things in one place, like their baptism records.  I was looking through it and found this little gem that my grandmother had given me when I had Carter.  It's a really old brochure that came from the hospital in Bennettsville, SC where she was a volunteer called "What is a Boy?" and I fell in love with it so I thought I should share it for all my boy parent friends.

Between the innocence of babyhood and the dignity of manhood we find a delightful creature called a boy.  Boys come in assorted sizes, weights, and colors, but all boys have the same creed: To enjoy every second of every minute of every hour of every day and to protest with noise (their only weapon) when their last minute is finished and the adult males pack them off to bed at night.

Boys are found everywhere - on top of, underneath, inside of, climbing on, swinging from, running around, or jumping to.  Mothers love them, little girls hate them, older sisters and brothers tolerate them, adults ignore them, and Heaven protects them.  A boy is Truth with dirt on its face, Beauty with a cut on its finger, Wisdom with bubble gum in its hair, and the Hope of the future with a frog in its pocket.

When you are busy, a boy is an inconsiderate, bothersome, intruding jangle of noise.  When you want him to make a good impression, his brain turns to jelly or else he becomes a savage, sadistic jungle creature bent on destroying the world and himself with it.

A boy is a composite - he has the appetite of a horse, the disposition of a sword swallower, the energy of a pocket-sized atomic bomb, the curiosity of a cat, the lungs of a dictator, the imagination of Paul Bunyan, the shyness of a violet, the audacity of a steel trap, the enthusiasm of a fire cracker, and when he makes something he has five thumbs on each hand.

He likes ice cream, saws, Christmas, comic books, the boy across the street, woods, water (in its natural habitat), large animals, Dad, trains, Saturday mornings, and fire engines.  He is not much for Sunday School, company, schools, books without pictures, music lessons, neckties, barbers, girls, overcoats, adults or bedtime.

Nobody else is so early to rise, or so late to supper.  Nobody else gets so much fun out of trees, dogs, and breezes.  Nobody else can cram into one pocket a rusty knife, a half-eaten apple, 3 feet of string, an empty Bull Durham sack, 2 gum drops, 6 cents, a sling shot, a chunk of unknown substance, and a genuine supersonic code ring with a secret compartment.

A boy is a magical creature - you can lock him out of your workshop, but you can't lock him out of your heart.  You can get him out of your study, but you can't get him out of your mind.  Might as well give up - he is your captor, jailer, your boss, and your master - a freckle-faced, pint-sized, cat-chasing, bundle of noise.  But when you come home at night with only the shattered pieces of your hopes and dreams, he can mend them like new with the two magic words - "Hi Dad!"

Love at First Bite

Being the impatient people that we are, we decided to pick Harry up a little early and made a trip to Rocky Mount last weekend after the Carolina game.  The day it snows is definitely the day to get a new puppy, right?!  The boys have been so fun to watch with Harry and baby him to death.  The poor dog can hardly move because he's constantly surrounded by little feet and hands oohing and aahing his every motion.  He thankfully loves his crate and walks right in without any persuasion.  Jamey and I like to think of it as his safe haven away from all the household action that is a constant with boys!  The boys have been tough and don't really complain about the dagger-like claws or sharp teeth that are constantly biting at their pants, ankles and clothes.  I think it's easy to see this little guy is well-loved!

This is our new breakfast routine!

Even when he's sleeping, they surround him with toys just in case he wakes up and wants to play.

Boy Oh Boy

Jamey and I were talking the other night about our kids and how we wish we could stop time and remember them just as they are at each different stage.  You think you'll never forget all their precious firsts and cute sayings but you inevitably do and have trouble remembering exactly what those little sayings are!  With that said, I just wanted to post a little update on everyone as of now, but I'm sure I will forget plenty!

I'm going to start with Hudson.  Oh Hudson, where to begin.  You are by far the most strong-willed and demanding Bass boy in my opinion.  You know what you want and when you want it, and you want it on your own time.  Whether it's a snack, more milk, a toy, etc., you are on your own little schedule.  You like things in order just like me, which I love, but you can be a little OCD about it.  Like if I'm cleaning and put something on the furniture for a minute to vacuum where it normally goes, you can't stand it and yell at me the whole time to put it back where it goes! You are quite chatty at times but you can be shy as well.  You have a "favorite lady" that checks us out at the grocery store and you freak out when she isn't working and yell at the poor other cashiers and tell them "no her my favorite lady, mommy!" You adore school and go two days a week but you love to be shy and like for me to hold you when we walk into your class.  Although I don't like it when you cry, I do love these cuddly times when you love being held and rest your head on my shoulder.  It only takes you a minute or two to warm up to your classroom but you are always so cute and excited at pickup time.  You run full speed out the door into my legs like I'm the best thing since sliced bread.  You know everyone in the entire school's name and are always pointing out kids I've never even noticed before and telling me their names!  Your teacher is Miss Rhonda, but you just called her "Rrhonda" without the Miss and with a lot of emphasis on the R!  She hopefully doesn't mind:).  You love books and all things related to cars, trucks, and boy things.  My favorite thing you say right now and have said for a while is "Hold you me" when you want to be picked up.  I'm sure Daddy will have more to add but that's all for now!

Now Mr. Cooper.  Although I still baby you and sometimes carry you up to bed at bedtime, you are growing up so fast right before our very eyes.  You like school and do well, but I wouldn't say you love it.  You are my lazy boy and would be perfectly content watching TV, playing video games, and eating for hours on end, although your food choices are still quite limited!  You don't really have a modest bone in your body and are definitely at ease showing off all of your skin to anyone around.  Not that you do it on purpose, you are just comfortable without a stitch of clothing on, regardless of your company.  You are learning so much in school and have very good fine motor skills, like writing your letters better than your big brother, but don't tell him I told you so!  Carter taught you how to draw a star and you have proudly carved a few with sticks into your dad's car.  It took about 3 months of us asking for you to confess your crime but you finally told us you were the culprit.  You love sports, especially baseball and tennis right now and you are very good at them both.  You just have natural athletic ability but you are usually scared to try things because you don't think you will be able to do them.  You are also my cuddler.  You are very affectionate and frequently come up to give me a kiss or hug for no reason at all.  At bedtime, after we have said prayers and kissed you goodnight, you always say we didn't kiss you and ask for, "one more smooch!"  You are very concerned with my appearance and beg me to please not wear my hair in a ponytail!  Just yesterday, you came into my bathroom while I was drying my hair and said, "Yes! I knew you were going to be pretty today Mommy! Thanks for being beautiful for me!"

Last but not least, my Carter.  You are such a kind, gentle child but not gentle in a negative way.  You are caring and compassionate in a way that is unbelievable to be only 7.  You do really well in school in all areas, but you have really excelled in Math and Social Studies.  Sounds vaguely familiar to someone that's about 6'2' that you favor quite a bit!  You like school and easily make friends and treat all your classmates with respect...you even recently received a character award for just that.  You already don't love your homework but once we actually do it, you usually breeze through it.  You love sports and playing outside and will go out and play with our neighbors from the time you get home from school until we tell you it's time to come in.  One of the many joys of cul de sac living and neighbors with children!  You swim three days a week and have learned so much and caught on so quickly.  It amazes me to watch you swim back and forth for a solid hour and not complain one bit.  You have three coaches and your head coach is nice but doesn't really baby anyone like all of your previous coaches.  This has been harder on me than you because I think you deserve more praise for all that you are doing but I guess it's a good thing to get used to just working hard and being driven by your own goals rather than praise from an adult.  You are usually patient and kind to your brothers and help them if they need help but if you are tired, which is happening more frequently, we all know to steer clear.  You can be quick to cry and yell but we know it's only because you've been up since the crack of dawn and gone from school to swim to homework, etc.

I'm amazed by how different each of you are.  You definitely have similarities but also quite obviously are your own little beings that make me the happiest and luckiest mom around.  I love you all so much and am so proud to be your parent.  It is a constant challenge to exercise patience as often as I must but I do try very hard to do what is best and to teach you to all be responsible, strong, and smart boys so you can grow up to be hard-working and well-rounded men.  I recently read something about how bad moments do not equal bad parents...that's definitely something I keep in mind often when my patience isn't at its peak!

Words To Live By

I saw this on facebook today and it reminded me a lot of the babies don't keep poem I've posted before.  It's just a nice reminder to enjoy my little angels while I still have the chance!

Oh give me patience when wee hands
Tug at me with their small demands.
And give me gentle and smiling eyes.
Keep my lips from hasty replies.
And let not weariness, confusion, or noise
Obscure my vision of life's fleeting joys.
So when, in years to come my house is still-
No bitter memories its room may fill.

Love it!

Meet Harry

Yes, we have bitten the bullet and are expanding our family by yet another boy, but this time of the canine variety.  After being dogless for over 2 years, we've been itching to enter back into the dog world!  We have occasionally checked out the pet classifieds but haven't really seen anything we were looking for until MLK day.  We were all off and had an entire day to spend together as a family with nothing to do, which is oh so very rare and precious!  I just happened to look at the classifieds that morning and noticed a litter of golden retrievers in Rocky Mount.  Jamey called the listing and a few minutes later off we went on our road trip to check out some puppies.  I don't think we were fooling ourselves but we kept telling each other, we're just looking, we don't have to get one...even though Jamey was smart enough to bring a blank check...but just in case:).  They were as you would expect perfect and precious and we picked a sweet boy and are naming him Harry.  The boys loved holding them and checking them out and can't wait until we get to bring our Harry home!

Cooper pointing to which one he wanted.

They also had a goat that likes to get on top of their cars!  Thankfully we parked in the front!

Harry and his brother...ours is in Jamey's left hand.

Hudson needs a little lesson in being gentle with puppies but hopefully he'll get there!

The Mama.

Jamey and I took Cooper and Hudson today to check on our puppy for a few minutes and we all we amazed at how much bigger he's gotten.  He's 4 weeks old now and we will pick him up on President's Day, when he'll be just over 6 weeks.
Cooper couldn't get enough of Harry today and kept telling us how much Harry liked him!

Initially he was gentle...

...until he started to choke the poor thing!

He's the one by Coop's arm.  And so the countdown begins...
